Co-Parent Counseling

If there is a conflict regarding children, the Superior Court can order counseling for the parents and the child (Family Code §3190). Often when the parents meet together with the counselor and mediator, minor differences are resolved quickly without escalating and leading to more litigation and greater expense.
Cases in the Children’s Court can also be seen when counseling for the parents is required by the court. The goal of the counseling is to help the parents work together to regain responsibility for their children, so the court can return the children to their parents.
Many judges are ordering co-parent counseling and reunification counseling to help parents and children develop better relationships. Many families benefit from this and can avoid added expense and stress by repeated court hearings.
Sometimes one parent resists counseling for a child. In these cases the courts can order counseling if it’s believed the sessions can provide more benefits than continuing litigation.
